Google Play Service Version 5.0 – Android Wearable

Good news for both Android users and Android Developers. For the first time in the history of android versions, biggest release is ANDROID L. But people are more interested to know what name they would keep for this version starting with ‘L’. Yeah! Well people keep guessing the name; this article is about ‘Android wear’ which Google play service introduced its new features with version 5.0 along with Android L preview; android wear is one among the new features. Other features are Analytics, App indexing, drive, play games, security and wallet. Before the Android L official release, they have released sample for developers. Google play services have introduced new set of API’s to communicate with your phone and android wear. So this android wear can display the most important notifications from your handheld device.

Want to note something? Just say “take a note”. By just covering your palm over the smart watch, the screen is turned off.

Glassware:

Glassware is hands free gadget; it’s in front of your eyes. Smart watch will not work in some time for example cycling, driving. It displays messages in front of you at the top right corner with a thin card so that it’s comfortable for you to see information and also see what is on your way. Best thing is you can take a picture hands free by just say “take a picture”. See the menu, it will tell which among is the healthiest food. Want to know history of famous location? Just see the location; you will get the history of it. There endless use of glassware which is exciting.

Design:

How do they do it? Android knows exactly when to give the information to you. So these wears have sensors! Which identifies you by taking all the sensor data such as, Locations, time, calendar, identity, nearby devices and it keeps track of your daily activities. These are done with micro interactions which are voice and cards. Smart watch uses static cards to display messages from notifications and that card can be controlled by single-action (play/pause). Swiping the card from left to right will dismiss the card and might appear again depending upon the information. Apps can take action in response with voice command. Depending on the command it invokes the intent. Glassware uses live card which will be present in the timeline as long as they are relevant information. It also supports gesture detection such as swiping, scrolling and tapping, example list the menu item by tapping the card. Voice input can be 3 ways, one to start the live cards, two to accept voice input within the activity and third system’s speech recognition activity.

For Android developers:

To develop android wear for watch, first update your sdk tools, platform-tools and build tools, along with Android L developer’s preview and Android 4.4W(API 20), through your android sdk manager. Or Download updated android adt bundle. For glassware you should have Android 4.4.2 (API 19) in which install Glass development preview. After downloading this you should be able to,

  • Create and start android wear emulator.
  • To pair wear in your handheld device, you should have android version 4.3 or above.
  • Then download Android wear app in your device.
  • Run this app and pair it with your emulator.

With the Google’s new project ‘Android wear’, manufacturers Asus, LG, Motorola and Samsung already started working on it. According to the news coming in, user will get to use wearable by the end of this year. Android Wear concentrates on two main features, notifications and voice recognition “OK Google”. Users, just wait for the release, which is going to blow your minds! Developers like me have already started to build the apps for smart watch and glass wear.
