Freedom 251 – Comparing it with other cheaper smart phones

Ringing Bells, a company based in India, has come up with a first of its kind mobile phone, the Freedom 251, that has taken the tech world by storm. It comes at a time where the market is wide open for low cost mobile devices and people are eager to enjoy higher functionality for lower prices. The demand for the phone has already been so overwhelming that the the company’s website received 6 lakhs hits per second, causing their servers to go down.

The company, motivated by the ‘Make in India’ initiative, aims to usher in a revolution by designing its phones in a manner that keeps costs extremely low.

Here is what you need to know about this brand new phone, before you get your hands on one (or many) of this mobile.

Features of the Freedom 251:

-Android Lollipop 5.1 that runs on a 1.3 GHz quad core processor.
– 4.0 inch qHD IPS display
-3.2MP rear facing camera and 0.3MP front facing camera.
-1GB RAM and 8GB internal memory, expandable up to 32GB.
-1450 mAh battery
-Pre-loaded apps like Swachch Bharath, Women’s Safety, Farmer and a host of commonly used apps.

Freedom 251 and its ‘competitors’

The Freedom 251 phone blows competition completely out of the water with its price. For a price bracket that was previously unimagined, one can say that if offers tremendous value for money, at least on paper. The recently released Lava X3 comes with a 5.0 inch IPS display, Quad core 1.3 GHz display, 2 GB RAM, 8GB memory expandable up to 32 GB. It is a dual sim phone that is also equipped with an 8MP primary and 5MP secondary camera. This phone, packed with many additional features like Corning Gorilla Glass and a larger screen is currently priced at Rs.6499/-


The Micromax Canvas Spark q380 priced at Rs.4999/- boasts of a 4.7in screen, Quad-core 1.3 GHz processor, Android 5.0, 1 GB RAM, 8GB memory expandable up to 32 GB, 8MP primary and 2MP secondary camera among other features.

Another notable comparison includes the soon to be released Xolo Era.

What is next?

When you expect your smartphone to cost marginally more than a pair of shoes, a designer t-shirt or even your monthly mobile bill, your reactions may range from awe to disbelief and even outright amusement. The phone has already inspired hilarious tweets and conspiracy theories alike. What remains to be seen is if the phone sustains the excitement of the masses and lives up to our expectations.
